Recently, members at Lexington Services DTA's adult day program in Show Low, Arizona came together for one of their favorite activities: chair volleyball. What may seem like a simple game quickly became an opportunity for laughter, teamwork, social interaction, and personal growth as members worked together to keep the ball moving and encourage one another throughout the game.
Held at the DTA facility, the activity brought members together for a friendly competition while staff members served as referees. The room was filled with smiles, laughter, and cheering as participants focused on supporting their teammates and having fun. It was easy to see why chair volleyball continues to be a favorite among the members.
When asked what they enjoy most about the game, members shared that they love the opportunity to laugh, interact with friends, and be part of the action. One member simply said, "I have fun and hit the ball," while another described it as "a game for everyone." Those comments perfectly capture the spirit of the activity and the welcoming environment that Lexington Services DTA strives to create every day.
Building Life Skills Through Play
While chair volleyball is certainly fun, it also provides meaningful opportunities for members to practice important life skills. Activities like this encourage communication, teamwork, patience, and problem-solving while helping members develop confidence in their abilities.
Throughout the game, members worked together toward a common goal, learning that success often comes from supporting one another rather than focusing on individual accomplishments. They also practiced perseverance by continuing to participate even when a play did not go as planned. One of the valuable lessons reinforced during the activity was that doing your best is what matters most, and if something does not happen the first time, there is always another opportunity to try again.
These experiences help members build skills that extend beyond recreational activities and into everyday life, where communication, resilience, and teamwork play important roles in achieving greater independence.
How Chair Volleyball Builds Teamwork and Confidence
For adults with developmental disabilities, meaningful social interaction is an important part of personal growth and well-being. Chair volleyball created a natural opportunity for members to engage with one another, celebrate successes, and strengthen friendships in a supportive environment.
Throughout the activity, members of varying abilities participated together, encouraged one another, and shared in the excitement of the game. The focus was never on winning or losing. Instead, the experience highlighted inclusion, participation, and the joy that comes from being part of a community.
At Lexington Services DTA, activities are designed to be more than entertainment. Whether members are participating in creative projects, life skills lessons, community outings, or group games like chair volleyball, each experience provides opportunities to build confidence, strengthen relationships, and develop practical skills that support daily life.
Supporting Meaningful Growth
Families often ask what growth looks like within an adult day program. Sometimes growth looks like learning a new skill. Sometimes it looks like building a friendship or gaining confidence in a new situation. And sometimes it looks like a room full of laughter as members work together to keep a beach ball moving through the air.
Activities like chair volleyball demonstrate how learning and growth can happen through engaging, enjoyable experiences. By combining fun with purpose, Lexington Services DTA helps adults with developmental disabilities build confidence, practice life skills, and enjoy meaningful connections with others while participating in a supportive and welcoming community.
