Members of Lexington Services DTA recently headed to Slade’s Ice Cream in Pinetop for one of their weekly community outings. The destination was one the members had agreed on together as part of their activity calendar, making the experience about more than simply getting out of the building for an afternoon.

Adult Day Program Activities That Build Real-World Skills
Each Wednesday, members have an opportunity to participate in a community outing they have helped select. That choice matters. Giving members a voice in where they go encourages decision-making, participation, and ownership of their weekly experiences. This time, the group chose Slade’s Ice Cream, located along White Mountain Boulevard in Pinetop.
For several members, it was their first visit. Others were happy to return to a place they already enjoyed. Either way, there was one very important decision waiting at the counter: What flavor should they choose?
Real-World Life Skills in Action
Ordering ice cream may seem like a simple part of everyday life, but experiences like this can provide meaningful opportunities to practice independence.
Members had the chance to look at their options, choose the flavor they wanted, communicate their selection, and work through purchasing their ice cream independently, with staff support available when needed. These are the kinds of real-world experiences that are an important part of Lexington’s adult day program in Show Low, Arizona.
Life skills are not limited to lessons inside a classroom or facility. They are practiced while making choices, navigating community spaces, communicating with others, managing purchases, and becoming increasingly comfortable doing everyday things independently.
And yes, enjoying the ice cream afterward is a pretty great reward.

Another thanked staff members Mrs. Vee and Mr. Michael for bringing the group back for another visit. Those reactions help tell the bigger story. A successful outing is not only about where the group went. It is about members enjoying an experience, feeling comfortable participating, and gaining confidence that can carry into other parts of their lives.
