Adult Day Program in Show Low AZ: A Day at Big Lake

There is something special about getting outside, visiting a beautiful place, and spending the day with people you enjoy. For members of Lexington Services DTA, a recent trip to Big Lake offered all of that, along with a chance to experience one of Arizona’s most scenic mountain destinations.
Located near Greer in the White Mountains of eastern Arizona, Big Lake sits at approximately 9,000 feet in elevation and provided a beautiful setting for the group’s Wednesday community outing. Members attending the program traveled with three staff members for a day centered on friendship, fresh air, and simply enjoying time together.
At our adult day program in Show Low AZ, outings like this are an important part of the experience. They give members opportunities to make choices, explore their community, strengthen relationships, and enjoy meaningful activities outside their normal routine.
A Community Outing Chosen by Members
Wednesdays at Lexington Services DTA offer members an opportunity to participate in a community outing they help choose. This time, they chose Big Lake.
For a few members, the trip marked their first visit to the lake. Others had been there before and were happy to experience it again with friends. The group spent time taking in the mountain scenery, talking, laughing, and enjoying being together outdoors. Even a little sprinkle of rain became part of the experience.
Director Valita James said one of the best parts of the outing was simply watching everyone enjoy each other’s company.
“It was nice to see them all have a good time, laugh and talk with each other,” James said.
The members seemed to agree. One asked, “Miss Vee, can we come back again?” Another shared, “It looks so pretty. I like going places and spending time with my friends.”
Those reactions capture what makes days like this meaningful. The destination may be Big Lake, but the real experience is about connection, choice, friendship, and being part of the community.
Community Experiences That Support Growth
Community outings are an important part of our adult day program in Show Low AZ because learning and personal growth can happen in many different settings.
Spending time in the community gives members opportunities to experience new environments, communicate their preferences, interact with others, and become more comfortable navigating experiences outside the facility. These moments can support confidence and independence while giving members the chance to enjoy experiences many people value in everyday life.
Lexington Services DTA incorporates community engagement alongside structured activities, life skills development, hands-on projects, creative work, and social interaction. Together, these experiences help create a program that supports the whole person rather than focusing on any single skill.
A trip to the lake may look like a fun day outdoors, and it certainly is. At the same time, it creates natural opportunities for members to make decisions, socialize with peers, adapt to a different environment, and discover new places and interests.
Building Connections Beyond the Facility
For adults with developmental disabilities, meaningful community participation can help create a stronger sense of connection and belonging. That is one reason Lexington Services DTA makes community outings a regular part of the program.
Members are not simply being taken somewhere for the day. They have a voice in choosing where they would like to go and an opportunity to experience those places alongside friends and supportive staff.
That choice is meaningful. So is the opportunity to laugh together, have conversations, see something new, and return home with another shared memory.
For the members visiting Big Lake for the first time, the outing introduced them to another part of the White Mountains they call home. For returning visitors, it offered a new opportunity to enjoy a familiar place with their Lexington community.
An Adult Day Program in Show Low AZ Focused on Meaningful Experiences
Lexington Services DTA supports adults with developmental disabilities through structured routines, community engagement, social interaction, hands-on activities, and opportunities to build greater independence.
Each day can look a little different. Members may work on life skills, participate in creative projects, spend time with peers, or head into the community for an experience like the Big Lake outing. What connects these activities is a focus on creating meaningful opportunities for participation, growth, confidence, and connection.
Sometimes that growth happens while learning a practical skill or completing a project. Other times, it happens during a conversation with a friend, while exploring somewhere new, or while standing beside a lake in the White Mountains and deciding, “Yes, I would definitely like to come back here.”
For families, guardians, and caregivers searching for an adult day program in Show Low AZ, Lexington Services DTA offers a supportive environment where adults with developmental disabilities can build skills, form connections, participate in their community, and enjoy meaningful experiences together.
