Adult Day Program Community Outing in Show Low Brings Smiles at Slade’s Ice Cream

Our members gather together, talk through options, and decide where they would like to go for their weekly community outing. These outings are not just trips. They are opportunities to build independence, confidence, communication skills, and meaningful connections within the community.

On January 28, 2026, after lunch, the members chose to return to a favorite local spot: Slade’s Ice Cream in Pinetop-Lakeside. And from the smiles alone, it is clear they made the perfect decision.

A Meaningful Adult Day Program Community Outing

As soon as they arrived, members were welcomed into the cheerful atmosphere of Slade’s. Bright displays of ice cream flavors lined the counter, offering plenty of delicious options to explore.

But this outing was about more than picking a favorite flavor.

Each member had the opportunity to:

• Look over the available choices

• Decide what they wanted

• Place their order

• Complete their purchase with staff support

Moments like these matter. They encourage thoughtful decision-making. They strengthen real-world money skills. They create space for communication with community members. And they reinforce independence within a safe and supportive environment.

For many adults with special needs, experiences like this build confidence that carries far beyond a single afternoon.

Smiles, Laughter, and Confidence in the Community

One adult day program member proudly held her cone for the camera, a little bit of ice cream dotting her nose and mouth, smiling with satisfaction. It was the kind of moment that perfectly captures joy in its simplest form.

At nearby tables, members sat in small groups, two at each table, enjoying their treats and each other’s company. Some were nearly finished with their cones, still grinning at the camera. Others took their time, savoring each bite.

Staff member Michael joined in the fun as well, sitting alongside the group and reinforcing that Lexington outings are shared experiences built on connection, encouragement, and community.

Why Community Outings Matter for Adults with Special Needs

For some members, this was not their first visit. In fact, returning to Slade’s was something they specifically requested.

One member shared her excitement, saying:

“I love this place. I want to come back again. The ladies were nice.”

Her words highlight something powerful. Community outings are not just about the activity.

They are about belonging. They are about being welcomed. They are about building positive relationships with local businesses and feeling seen and valued. That sense of welcome leaves a lasting impression.

Sweet Moments, Lasting Impact

What might look like a simple ice cream trip is, in reality, a layered experience of growth, joy, and connection.

It is laughter shared at small tables. It is confidence built at the counter. It is pride in making a personal choice. It is community members welcoming Lexington participants with kindness.

And yes, it is a little ice cream on the nose.

At Lexington Services DTA, these moments are celebrated because they represent progress, inclusion, and real-world experience. The members do not just attend outings. They actively shape them.
