Member Chosen Movie Outing at Lexington Services DTA
Every Wednesday at Lexington Services DTA in Show Low, something meaningful happens before the group ever leaves the building. The day begins with choice.
In our adult day program, Wednesdays are dedicated to community outings that are selected by the members themselves. These outings are not assigned. They are chosen. That sense of ownership turns an ordinary activity into a powerful opportunity for independence, confidence, and connection.
On December 3, 2025, members chose a trip to the movies in Lakeside to see Zootopia 2. The outing took place at 1501 W. White Mountain Blvd. and quickly became a moment worth remembering.
Wednesdays Built Around Choice and Independence
Choice is a core part of daily life at Lexington Services DTA. Giving members the opportunity to decide where they want to go encourages self-advocacy and reinforces that their voices matter.
This particular outing made the December calendar because it was something the members genuinely wanted. That simple decision sets the tone for everything that follows and helps create meaningful engagement rather than passive participation.
A Community Outing to the Movies in Lakeside, Arizona
Before the movie even began, the excitement was already visible. Seven members lined up in front of the theater’s claw games, smiling and holding their movie treats. Popcorn, soda, candy, and laughter filled the space.
Each member purchased their own snacks, practicing real-world skills in a fun and relaxed environment. These moments allow independence to grow naturally, without pressure, while still being supported by staff.
Inside the theater, the group settled in together to enjoy the movie. The shared experience created an easy sense of connection and comfort as everyone watched and laughed together.
Building Real World Skills Through Shared Experiences
Community outings like this support more than social time. They help members practice everyday life skills that build long-term confidence.
During this outing, members navigated a public space, managed money, made personal choices, and participated in a group activity they selected themselves. These experiences strengthen independence while reinforcing trust in familiar routines and staff support.
Learning happens naturally when members feel comfortable, respected, and excited to participate.
Moments of Joy That Strengthen Confidence and Connection
After the movie, the group gathered outdoors in the shopping center, smiling and enjoying the moment together. Members shared their thoughts openly, saying the movie was awesome, cute, and something they truly loved. The popcorn received enthusiastic approval as well.
While these reactions may seem simple, they reflect something meaningful. Joy, confidence, and belonging are powerful indicators of progress.
Sometimes success looks like laughter. Sometimes it looks like pride in making your own choices. And sometimes it looks like enjoying a great movie with friends.
Why Our Adult Day Program Members' Choices Matter
At Lexington Services DTA, outings are not just about getting out into the community; they are about honoring independence, encouraging decision-making, and creating moments that feel purposeful and enjoyable.
Member choice builds confidence, reinforces trust, and reminds everyone involved that progress often shows up in everyday experiences.
For the members who chose this movie outing, the takeaway was simple and meaningful.
It was awesome. They loved the movie. And they loved the popcorn.
Sometimes, that is exactly what a great Wednesday looks like.
