Wednesdays Built Around Choice and Independence
Every Wednesday, Choice leads the way at Lexington Services DTA in Show Low.
For the adults we serve, Wednesdays are more than just another day on the calendar. They are a reminder that independence, community, and personal choice are valued and celebrated. Each week, members in the adult day program choose where they want to go for their scheduled community outing, and this week, their choice brought them to the Pinetop Library in Lakeside.
A Weekly Visit to the Pinetop Library
Walking into the library, there was a sense of familiarity and excitement. The members know this place well. They remember the day they go, they look forward to it, and they arrive ready to participate. With the warm guidance of Miss Tammy from the library, members gathered around a table filled with markers, glue, scissors, and paper plates. Together, they listened to a story and then moved into a hands-on art activity.
Hands-On Creativity That Builds Confidence
One by one, members proudly held up their creations. Paper plate turkeys came to life with colorful feathers and bold marker designs. Laughter and smiles filled the room as each finished piece was shared. For some, this moment carried extra meaning. A few members had initially believed they could not complete the activity on their own. With encouragement, patience, and support, they did exactly that. By the end, the pride on their faces said everything.

From Doubt to Pride Through Creative Expression
The creativity continued as members worked on intricate paper snowflakes. Carefully cut and thoughtfully designed, each snowflake reflected focus, perseverance, and personal expression. Once finished, five members held their snowflakes high, smiling alongside the library staff who helped make the experience welcoming and inclusive.
Why Community Outings Matter in an Adult Day Program
Outings like these go far beyond crafts and stories. They provide meaningful opportunities for social connection, confidence building, and life skills development. Members engage with the community, practice communication, and experience the joy of completing something they once doubted they could do.
Most importantly, they leave feeling capable.
Building Confidence That Lasts Beyond the Day
As the visit wrapped up, the excitement for next Wednesday was already building. The library is more than a destination. It is a space where members feel included, challenged, and take pride in themselves. These are the moments that matter. The moments that stay with them. These moments show what is possible when adults with special needs are supported, encouraged, and given the chance to choose their own path.
