A Movie Day Experience at Our Adult Day Program in Show Low, AZ
On a recent Wednesday, members of Lexington Services DTA headed out for a community outing that was entirely their choice. The destination was the local theater at WME Movie Theater, where they gathered to watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie together.
From the moment they arrived, excitement filled the air. Members stood together in front of the movie poster, smiling, holding popcorn, candy, and drinks they had selected themselves. It was a simple moment on the surface, but one that represented choice, independence, and shared joy.
More Than a Movie
This outing was not just about watching a film. It was about giving members the opportunity to make decisions, participate in their community, and experience the world in a meaningful way.
Every Wednesday, members choose where they would like to go. This small but powerful act reinforces independence and personal preference. In this case, the group chose a movie experience, and the impact was immediate.
“This was awesome,” one member shared.“Miss Vee, I loved the movie,” said another.“Today was a good day.”“Can we go to the movies again?”
Moments like these reflect more than enjoyment. They show connection, confidence, and a sense of belonging.
Real-World Skills in Action
Outings like this are intentionally designed to help members apply real-world life skills in a supportive environment.
During this visit, members:
Practiced decision-making by choosing their outing and selecting their snacks
Built social skills by interacting with peers and staff in a public setting
Strengthened independence by navigating a community space
Experienced routine and structure while engaging in something fun
These experiences help bridge the gap between learning and real-life application, which is a core part of what makes the program effective.
Building Confidence Through Community
At Lexington Services DTA, every activity is designed with purpose. Whether members are participating in hands-on projects at the center or heading out into the community, the goal remains the same: to build confidence, encourage independence, and create meaningful experiences.
Community outings like this movie trip allow members to:
Engage with the world around them
Strengthen relationships with peers
Practice everyday life skills in real environments
Feel included and valued in their community
