Mummies, Bingo, and a Memorable Library Adventure

Learning gets a whole lot more exciting when you can wrap your friends in toilet tissue.

During their weekly visit to Pinetop Public Library, members of Lexington Services DTA enjoyed a day filled with books, fossil bingo, ancient history, and plenty of laughter. This community outing gave members an opportunity to explore a fascinating topic while practicing communication, decision-making, creativity, and social skills.

It was educational. It was interactive. And yes, it got a little silly in the best possible way.

During the library visit, members learned about mummies and the ways ancient Egyptians preserved people and animals, including cats.

As members listened to the book, they asked questions, shared their thoughts, and explored a part of history that may have been completely new to them. The lesson became even more memorable when members wrapped one another in toilet tissue to create their own playful versions of mummies.

One member summed up the experience perfectly: “That was fun!”

That simple reaction says a lot. When people are engaged, comfortable, and enjoying themselves, learning becomes more meaningful.

Making Learning Active and Engaging

The group also participated in fossil bingo, adding another interactive element to the visit.

Activities like bingo encourage members to listen, recognize information, follow instructions, wait for their turn, and interact with others. These may seem like small actions, but they reinforce skills that can be used in everyday life.

At our adult day program in Show Low, learning is not limited to worksheets or lessons inside the facility. Members are encouraged to participate, ask questions, make choices, and experience the world around them.

Sometimes growth looks like completing a life skills activity. Sometimes it looks like confidently joining a group game. And sometimes it looks like laughing while being wrapped like a mummy in the middle of the library. It all counts.

Every Wednesday, members have the opportunity to choose where they would like to go for a community outing. These choices give members a voice in their weekly experiences while helping them practice decision-making and self-advocacy.

Visits to places like Pinetop Public Library also help members become more comfortable in shared community spaces. With staff support, they practice appropriate public behavior, communication, participation, and navigating familiar routines outside the facility.

These real-world experiences are an important part of our adult day program in Show Low because life skills become more meaningful when members have opportunities to use them.
